Open plains, elephants, giraffes, hippos and lions, a few hours by road from Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s easiest safari without a domestic flight.
Mikumi National Park sits in south-central Tanzania, on the paved highway from Dar es Salaam. Its heart is the Mkata Floodplain, open grassland framed by mountains, where elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras and hippos are seen with ease.
Park fees are low, vehicles are few and you do not need a domestic flight. It suits travellers in Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar with only a few days, and it makes a natural first stop on the southern circuit before Nyerere or Ruaha.

Mikumi is easy to reach. A paved highway carries you from Dar es Salaam almost to the gate, and you can see animals from the road before you pay a park fee.
The heart of the park is the Mkata Floodplain: open grassland with scattered trees, seasonal wetland and a river, with mountains framing the horizon. Operators sometimes call Mikumi “Little Serengeti”. Treat that as a sales line. The park is smaller and less dramatic than the Serengeti, but it is quieter, and the viewing is easy.
The A7 highway splits the park. This helps access, but it also creates risks.
| Good | The drive in doubles as a first game drive. You may see giraffes, baboons, zebras, buffalo or elephants near the road. |
| Bad | Vehicles hit wildlife. Operators report lions and buffalo killed on the road, especially at night. A 50 km/h speed limit applies on the park section, with speed bumps to enforce it. |
Sightings depend on season, luck and location. Here is a realistic picture.
| How likely | Animals |
|---|---|
| Common | Elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, impala, yellow baboons, vervet monkeys and warthogs. Hippos are in the hippo pools all year, in pods operators put at roughly 20 to 40. |
| Often seen | Lions. Prides live in the park, and sightings are reported often. Eland and greater kudu are also seen. |
| Less common | Leopards, spotted hyenas, sable antelope and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest. Cheetahs are reported rarely. |
| Rare and uncertain | African wild dogs. A few sources list them. Do not plan around them. |
| Not present | Rhinos |
Some pages list Mikumi as a “Big Five” park. It is not. Four of the five occur (lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard), and leopards are secretive.
Some operators say lions climb trees in Mikumi. The evidence is thin, and it is not a reliable sighting.
Over 400 species have been recorded. The hippo pools attract fish eagles, spoonbills and waders, and lilac-breasted rollers are common. The green season, roughly November to May, is often best for migrant birds.
The main viewing area and the best place for open-country wildlife. Herds gather near the river and waterholes, especially in the dry season.
A signature stop for hippos, crocodiles and birds. Check current rules before leaving your vehicle.
The park headquarters and an airstrip sit here, and baboons gather near this zone.
Hills and woodland in the south feel quieter and more remote. Animals are harder to see, and access depends on track conditions and season.
Morning and afternoon drives are the core activity. A half-day drive covers the main circuit; a full day gives you a second drive.
Operators and listings report night drives in Mikumi with an extra permit, at a reported fee of about USD 50 per person. Check current availability and rules with us before you plan around one.
Short walks with a ranger are offered in set areas, at a reported fee of around USD 30 per person or a set fee for a small group. One operator says walks run in the dry season for adults only.
The floodplain, the hippo pools and the soft light at dawn and dusk give good chances.
Public and special campsites exist, and camping fees apply.
Activity rules and fees change. We confirm current details when we plan your trip.
TANAPA sets the park fees. Published figures for 2026 to 2027:
| Fee | Reported rate |
|---|---|
| Non-resident adult | USD 30 per day, or USD 35.40 with 18% VAT |
| Child (5–15) | USD 10 per day |
| Under 5 | Free |
| Public campsite | Around USD 30 per person |
| Special campsite | Around USD 50 per person |
Vehicle fees, and concession fees for overnight stays inside the park, are extra.
Some sources quote much higher fees. We confirm the current tariff in your quote.
Mikumi is cheap compared with northern circuit parks. Your total cost still depends on transport, accommodation and trip length.
| Period | Conditions | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| June to October | Dry season | Best for wildlife. Vegetation thins and animals gather near water. |
| November to early December | Short rains begin | Green scenery and less dust. Some roads soften. |
| January to March | Hot, humid and green | Fewer visitors and good birding. A good shoulder window. |
| April to May | Long rains | Wet tracks. Some parts may be hard to reach. |
No month is perfect. Dry months give the easiest viewing; green months give birds and quiet.
| Length | What it gives you |
|---|---|
| Day trip from Dar es Salaam | Possible, but the drive takes most of the day. You may get only four to five hours in the park. |
| Two days, one night | Usually the sweet spot: an afternoon drive, a morning drive and a calmer pace. |
| Three days, two nights | Better if you want a night drive, a walk and more time at the hippo pools. |
| Four days or more | Makes sense if you add Udzungwa Mountains National Park or Nyerere National Park. |
Short flights can cut the road time. Operators report scheduled or charter flights to the Mikumi airstrip at Kikoboga, with flight times given from about 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. We check routes when you book.
| From | Details |
|---|---|
| Dar es Salaam by road | About 4 to 5 hours on tarmac. Traffic in Dar can add time. |
| Morogoro by road | Roughly 2 hours. |
| By air | Charter or scheduled flights to the Mikumi airstrip, often connecting through Dar es Salaam. |
| Zanzibar | Fly or take a ferry to Dar es Salaam, then continue by road or air. |
| Arusha or northern Tanzania | About 795 km by road. That is a multi-day drive, not a transfer, so most northern travellers fly. |
| Kenya | Mikumi is far from the border. Most travellers connect through Dar es Salaam. |
Mikumi works as a gateway to the south.
| Park | How it fits |
|---|---|
| Nyerere National Park | To the south, roughly 90 minutes by one operator’s estimate. Boat safaris and a wilder feel; it costs more and takes more effort. |
| Udzungwa Mountains National Park | About 1.5 to 2 hours away. Forest walks, waterfalls and endemic primates. A strong pairing for hikers. |
| Ruaha National Park | 5 to 6 hours by road, or a flight. Big cats and elephants, and more remote. |
| Saadani National Park | A coastal option for beach plus bush. |
Different parks have different fees and rules. Do not assume one fee covers them all.

Lodges and camps sit inside the park, near the gates and in Mikumi town. Choices range from camping and simple tented camps to mid-range lodges, and operators say Mikumi has few true luxury options.
| Option | Why choose it |
|---|---|
| Inside the park | Start early and avoid the highway at night. Concession fees apply. |
| Outside the park | Costs less and gives you more variety. |
We do not list specific lodges here, because availability and rates change. Ask us for current options for your dates.
Mikumi is in a lowland area where mosquitoes are present. Ask your doctor about malaria prevention before you travel.
Yes, if you want an accessible safari with open plains, elephants, giraffes, hippos and lions. It is less suited to travellers who want rhinos, the migration or remote wilderness.
No. It has no rhinos. Lions, elephants and buffalo are present, and leopards occur but are rarely seen.
Yes, but it is long. Expect 8 to 10 hours of road time. Two days works better.
About 283 to 300 km, usually 4 to 5 hours.
June to October for wildlife. November to May for greener scenery and birds.
Operators report that they are, with an extra permit. Confirm before you book.
No. The Great Wildebeest Migration happens in the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara.
They are reported but rare. Do not plan around them.
Yes. Both are common add-ons.
Park fees are lower than in many northern parks. Your total depends on transport, accommodation and trip length.
